Brief

My name Ahmed Mohamed and I am currently in my second year of studying  year of studying A level Media Studies and as part of my coursework  this year was to create an independent slasher horror trailer , this included research about slasher codes and conventions , planning of the production , constructions of the media products and 4 evaluation which explains the choices , steps , difficulties that were found.

We firstly needed to research which was an important part because i needed to have a detailed understanding  of the horror slasher genre and integrate those tot the trailer , magazine and magazine cover in which i needed to include a structure of understanding of the codes and conventions in order to have a successful media product.

We collected data of quantitative and qualitative through the use of questionpro .com which allowed me to distribute my survey to my audience and cater their needs and wants. The use of social network like facebook and twitter helped me reach my target audience. It also involved finding out about detailed knowledge on existing pieces of media like posters, trailer, and magazine.

We then needed to decide on the synopsis of our slasher film which would fit the common codes and convention slasher genres, also challenge them; we needed to plan out the synopsis so we didn’t miss out on any theories like the genre and narrative theory. After completing the synopsis we created storyboard for the trailer , the storyboard allows you to plan out how a trailer will turn out , We had decided about the camera angles/camera shots , sounds , editing and mise en scene , and furthermore how the narrative will fit in the trailer and how it display the sense of genre. We decided to animate the storyboard to help us visually see a moving image of our trailer, it helped us point out any improvements we could do.
After completing the storyboard, we decided to market research what my target audience enjoy about horror films. I needed to gather both quantitative and qualitative data in order to find and recognise my audience wants and needs. I used an online questionnaire known as QuestionPro which allowed me to survey my target audience about their likes in horror slasher films. This was quick and effectively done; i was able to distribute the questionnaire social networking sites such as twitter and Facebook by sharing the link to the questions. This was particularly effective as i was able to collect vast amount of data and fast responses.

Before we started filming, we decided to create a shooting script and call sheet in order to maintain a structure and keep everything organized, this was effective as we knew what we were filming on what days. We then needed to find what actors would take part in our trailer. I took Recce shots of location  to ensure that it would fit within the slasher genre. All the filming recordings we done was saved in a external hard drive which allowed us to store lots of filming, and was portable , meaning we could edit anywhere. Serif Movie Plus is a editing software , which was used in the construction of trailer

Unlike Hollywood blockbuster films, we can’t afford industry level equipment and software due us being a independent film production we had restricted on the use of budget. Therefore our independent film production has been limited however being a slasher a sub genre of horror this aloud me create a successful trailer, magazine and poster a covers as slasher film  conventionally use low budget and still do well with their demographic, furthermore they do not demand

I done 4 evaluation questions based on our project,  which evaluated all the stages Research, planning and construction of  my ancillary tasks. I was able to answer these question effectively.

Research: Analysis of Existing Horror Trailers

DEAD MAN'S SHOES

Most slasher horror trailers have the same codes and conventions to illustrate the sense of genre since a lot of those films have the same storyline. Dead Man’s Shoes can be portrayed as a non conventional slasher film however it has element of slasher films, this is because we see the film from point of view shot POV of the killer.

The beginnign of the trailer is conventional, it starts with the distributions companies’ logo which then is followed by a non  diegetic sound melody which goes in a slow past at the beginning which allows establish the scene. todrov equilibrium can be applied to the trailer ,. The slow non diegetic sound and the establishing shot, shows top of the trees to see what is happening in the scene. The establishing shot fades in to a shot which we see the characters. The first character is called Richard who is on the road, which can convey the sense of a long journey and that he’s returning home. He might have come from a war
from it shows. Unlike him we see his other brother  Anthony walking on the road but there not communicating which can illustrate that the fact , they are on different paths of the their own , this can be seen through the mise en scene.

Richard is carrying an army rucksack and some clothes to let the audience identify what type of character he is. He is shown as a veteran and the fact that he’s not wearing uniform shows that he is no longer in the army.

The landscape in the scene is very empty with grey clouds indicating there’s a storm coming soon, this is conventional location to many horror films it is quit lonely and quiet; however during this point of the trailer it doesn’t feel scary since the 2 characters are together, makes the landscape less tense.

In the next shot we see the two characters travelling through the woods, it shows shadows everywhere which is conventional the horror genre, the shadows can represent that he cannot psychologically get out from. The non diegetic music is still consistent, this can represent that it is the characters home or somewhere he has been to. It can also furthermore represent
the characters personality it can show Richard as a calm person before the storm.
We see captions to help the audience are still up to date with the narrative, so that they can follow along the trailer understanding what happen. It represents how strong the bond between the two characters is. Furthermore we see a flashback of an old footage of the brothers to convey how protective Richard to his brother and illustrates the love between them. This helps the audience to identify with the character and help create connection between him and also emphasis with the character in order for the audience to create a perception of him that will prove his intentions later on.
The whole sequence shown conveys a sense of British social realism as it represents the idea of a small story about  struggling relationship, furthermore the use of non known actors , are represented as working class behaviour and also they are not meant to look attractive.

The next scene shows Richard putting his on a  grey crack wall which can convey there living in a domestic situation and furthermore the cracks can represent the psychological cracking state of mind this suggests the insanity going through Richards mind. Unlike Richard, there is nothing
behind Anthony’s head except from plants and trees which represents life, nature, peaceful. This type of location is common in horror films, because it is middle out of nowhere.

We gain a further understanding of the trailer’s genre as we are presented with caption saying “VENGENCE”". The atmosphere is changes from an old folky sound to a screeching sound. The sounds help give a clue that the horror has started due to its sudden change. Both factors help to convey the sense of horror. This disrupts the todrov theory equilibrium.
We are presented with black and white flashbacks of past events. The quick flashbacks transition is conventional in horror trailer as they help to give a sense of suspense as well building up pace. It shows Richards brother Anthony being tormented and laughed at by a group of bullies.

We see the killer for the first time, and we know its Richard however he is conveyed in a conventional horror film as typical slasher killer as he is wearing a mask to cover up his face. The main character in the film is both protagonist and antagonist set to take on binary opposite’s role, even though he is the killer in this film he can also be seen as the victim.
The pace of the trailer increases and the montage editing is shown which is very conventional in horror trailers. The montage editing allows the audience to identify what is right and wrong by blurring the lines between them. If wrong it cuts to a flashback of Anthony being bullied, therefore suggesting that Richard has the right to kill them. We see red flashes suggesting blood and foreshadows the violence that is about to begin. The frequency of the red flash increases where the pace starts also increase after a sense of the narrative has been established.

In the next shot we see a binary opposite of the antagonist called sonny, the role is the bad person Sonny and the role of the good person is Richard however the roles are mixed up since Richard posses the two qualities of bad and good. The man Richard is talking to in the next scene clearly shows he is the antagonist and can be seen through the mise en scene, by wearing all black representing darkness and evil.

When the pace is starting to increase during the 2nd half of the trailer, there is much more   horror suggestion of horror as Richard is shown to be carrying an axe which is described as the killer’s weapon of choice.

Near the end of the trailer we see many advertisements in the illustrated in  star rating and quotation of reviews are conventional to many trailers, they allow to promote low budget independent films like dead man shoes as they attract attention. It is considered as a seal of approval which helps to attract the much needed attention that it is a must see film. The effect of using fire effect typography conveys hell and gives it a horror type feel. The director’s name is also included in the trailer (Shane Meadows) so the audience will recognise him and therefore identify with his films; therefore it is a big selling point of the film.

An end card is used to finish off the trailer; it is a way saying to the audience that the trailer is finished. It includes names of the production companies, actors, websites, directors etc.

Halloween

I am going to analyse a film called Halloween released in 1987 produced directed by john carpenter. This was one of the most successful low budget slasher film ever made, The .film is about a psychotic killer called Michael Myers who has been put in a mental prison after killing his older sibling, who later escapes, stalks group of 3 teens.
The trailer starts off with establishing point of view shot of an isolated house the audience is already aware by now what genre it is presented , a handheld camera is used to add some verisimilitude and the non-diegetic sound is used to build up tension, the music is high pitch which gives sort of  alertness. All this reinforces the film being a horror genre.

The next shows then cuts to the killer stabbing someone which is taken from the killerspoint of view shot makes the audience feel uncomfortable as they can see themselves killing someone. This was applied to Roland Barthes Theory of semantic code, the idea is the  put killers place to  the audience to experience the narrative from one or more character’s point of view.  The killer is wearing a mask which is a common convention of a slasher films, this reinforces that it is a slasher film... We see the killer as if they are us
walking down the stairs and going outside where we see a vehical stopping by. The non-diegetic sound appears to get deeper and heavier into the scene, this is because of the  high pitch  diegetic sound of the music. Fast editing is used , The shot then suddenly changes to a person pulling off the mask of the killer to find out it is a little child which creates a sense of confusion in the audience. This is because the little boy is meant to convey a sense of vulnerability and innocence. The Diegetic sound has also been used when the person calls the little boys name ‘Michael’. The camera then cuts to a mid shot were we see the boy wearing a clown suit and holding a Sharpe knife reinforcing the audience that he is the killer.

It then  cuts to a caption which says ‘Halloween’ and then cuts again to an old man which it is done using montage editing.  This helps reinforce the horror genre , as halloween is   holiday which is assoiciated with monsters. The old man is talking along with the captions help convey audience with the narrative of the film and to build up tension. The audience believes that the old guy is a good
character. The camera then cuts to an attractive young woman in a car, which suggests that she is the villain’s first target which is common in horror films. The man starts climbing over the car effortlessly suggesting that there something superhuman about him, the man tries smashing the window glass and being taken out from her car at the late night. The camera then cuts back to the man who is the benefactor of the film where he says ‘.the killer is going to come back…’ which foreshadows the events which is about to come. While the man is talking, there is a low volume sound of non-diegetic sound being played in the background. This sound is calmer and quiet than the rest of the trailer because it is emphasising the significance of what this man is trying to say.
The next scene can be applied to todrov theory ,it shows a  group of teens  walking through a calm suburban area , not knowing that they are Michael Myers next victim ,  it starts off with a equilibrium however it doesnt last that long  , it is disrupted by the killer. The camera then goes behind them as if something is stalking them. The groups of friends turn around looking scared which links back to the old guy saying that he has come back. The non –diegetic sound used to break the equilibrium is set low to high pitch the more they look around the louder it gets , conveying that something bad will come.
We see a creaking door open slowly adding tension with a person dressed in white cloak like ghost ,
this links back to how the boy was dressed as a clown when he was young  , knowing that he is the killer.  The white represents the positive stuff however it juxtaposes as he is the antagonist of the film. From looking at it can just how much more scary he really as it can display just how messed up he is. Using low angle shot it shows the killer the more dominant one and the women on the bed to appear weaker.
In the next scene we see slowly paced montage editing has been used showing how Michael Myers kills his victims. Itshows a lot of shadows which common convention used in noir films which creates an eerie feeling ,then we witness a victim falling down hall of stairs from a point of view shot , from a low angle shot showing how powerless the victim is , this makes the audience scared and frightened as it places us the victim. This is typical conventions of a horror films. We hear diegetic sound of screams making the whole situation even scarier and adds a sense of realism. The sound increases therefore making creating even more tension.

The trailer end with a cliff hanger leaving the audience wanting to see more and who survived, this will only they would have to wait for when film releases in cinemas , this is a very conventional of movie trailers that leave the audience find out what happen.

 The Shinning

The shinning is a 1980’s psychological produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick is about a family who travels to an isolated hotel for the rest of winter where the father becomes possessed and his son posse’s psychotic abilities and has the ability to see things in the past and future.  The father starts causing chaos to kill his wife and son. I am going to attempt to analyse the way in which convention are coded.

Thee trailer challenges many of the codes and convention of common slasher horror trailers due to the way the trailer presents itself. The uniqueness of the trailer makes the audience want to see more therefore making it a successful trailer attracting the audience by standing out. The director and producer of the shining is Stanley Kubrick who is an internationally famous film maker who already would've had a set of audience wanting to see the film, therefore generating much wider audience due to his reputation (e.g. 2001 space odyssey).

The beginning of the trailer shows fade transition to an isolated hotel hall which in front of us shows to red strip lifts, this part of the trailer can be said as the equilibrium which todrov theory describes to create a sense of peacefulness just before the story of the film becomes disrupted. It is shot low angles creating a sense of panic and vulnerability, it is almost like a point of view shot. However the cosy furniture’s make the audience feel secured and comfortable. This creates binary opposition of the two factors. We hear fade in transition of a low – non diegetic sound, buzz type of sound , which this become louder and heavier throughout the clip.  It is like the trailer is having more of conventions of slasher trailer throughout the trailer , for example the pacing becomes  more faster and faster and the increased non diegetic sound , similar to such trailer as Halloween (1978)  by john carpenter. The trailer hardly uses any editing to convey a horror genre.

Captions are used in a end card which challenges many horror or any film trailer codes and convention as you normally would expect it to be in an ending of a film trailer .
The bright red lifts may represent death may happen any time soon as the lifts starts opening due the associated  colour red which can represent blood and death. The colour draws attention as being the focal point of the trailer. The hotel hall way looks isolated and
abandoned along with the non diegetic sound helps to create suspense. The image of the hotel corridor and the non diegetic sounds helps to form juxtaposition between the two , as without the scary music , it can be viewed in a different way.  As the lifts start opening huge amounts of blood is seen pouring out in to the hall way of the hotel in slow paced motion. This follows Todrovs theory as their will always by a disruption to an equilibrium then resolution to the problem. The blood rushes  towards the camera and blurs the audiences view , this makes the audience panick as they don’t know whats happening. Afterwards it becomes clearer however there is a bit of blood left on camera lenses.

In conclusion I believe the trailer is unconventional however still has elements of horror trailers you would expect. Furthermore it also conveys the sense of slasher genre by using creepy music and blood baths.

Film Synopsis

The film is centred on a group of young friends on their results day, we learn that all of the friends apart from one girl (the final girl) have got very poor results due to all of the time they spent messing around in class. The friends are going to a party that evening in the forest behind the houses to celebrate school ending. All throughout this, a hooded boy can be seen watching the friends. All of the parents of the friends tell them they should not go out as their results are nothing to celebrate, but despite this, everyone meets up. The main Jock, Jack and the final girl, Rose goes back to their school as they had forgotten to pick up their results. Whilst at school, a hooded boy (who appears to be the same age as the characters) chases the two around school and kills them.
The rest of the group of friends are all at the forest waiting for them so the party can begin. When going to explore the forest and set up for the party, they are killed one by one. Through the dialog and such, we learn that the killer was a class mate of the friends, and was bullied so traumatically by them in class that they could not focus on their studies and ended up getting bad results, so to get his revenge he decides to go on a murderous rampage.

When only the final girl and the killer are left, we learn from the final girl that the killer was not bullied, and that it is all his imagination, he got bad results because he always showed up to lesson high/drunk. The final girl (with the help of a teacher who lived nearby and heard the shouts) manage to kill the killer. His body then mysteriously disappears suggesting there will be a sequel.

Genre

Genre Analysis

Genre is a very important concept to everyone also involving film makers , film critcs and audience as well as media theorist.  Over the years many studies have been carried out to catogeries films through various common patterns as well as what we learn from the categorisation of a film as atext.
Genres are decided  by set of rules of codes and conventions and have no set boundaries and that many films today have divided into  sub genres ,who do not belong to just one genre. For example there are lots of formation of sub genres like Rom Coms which are combination romantics and comedy genres. This applies to horror genres as well , horror genre is divided into many sub  genre categories which  lie under the horror genre , supernatural , comedy , demons,  , slasher and many more .  These codes and convention allow the audience to identify particular genres as they would expect certain thing withi in it to occur. All of the sub genres need to share some common qualities of the genre like the narrative so the storyline and plots  are often familiar to emphasise the overall genre. There are common types of characters i.e., sexually promiscuous girl, final girl . Benefactor, monster etc. the films often share the geographical setting etc. All of these illustrate to the audience what genre the film they are watching is. In order to study my horror slasher trailer “The result,
There 2 ways to identify a film genre is to approach from a descriptive or a functional point of view. The 1 st one includes the viewing a film as belonging to a genre or a category , this involves a film to share similar contribution with other films in the same category.  This can be said in our film as their is a  descriptive approach as it does share common values of other slasher film genres .  our film has a final girl  , who is represented as a pure and quiet one , the group of friends , the sexually promiscuous teenage girl  , the killer etc.  Furthermore it is set on the woods .
Most or all of these textual properties can be seen many slasher /horror films like scream , Halloween , Friday 13th and along with  many other ones.
The2 nd approach to study film genre is the functional approach where you need to think about the producers and audience and how a it applies to a trailer

Story Boards

Planning: Casting Calls

Planning: Recce

Before we could start filming we went on a few location "recce" shots, in which we went to many different potential shooting locations, took pictures, went home and evaluated which location would be the best to use. Here are some of the shots we got with an explanation on why we did and didn't choose to use each area

Whilst looking for a suitable forest location, we found a small marsh type area, and whilst it definitely looked like it would fit a horror film well, it was not what we were looking for and would not be very practical to film in (e.g slipping and damaging equipment).

We decided to film some shots at our school as that would fit the narrative and would make the film not only seem more realistic, but be even scarier to our target audience who all still attend school.

Planning: Shooting Script

Planning: Call Sheet

Call sheets are very beneficial when we wanted to film, we gave out the call sheets to each of our group member as it helps you stay organised and on task, something that can be difficult when doing something such as filming. the call sheet informed about any necessary infomation and updates about the production of the film. My group in particular found using call sheets helpful as it allowed us to know exactly what to do and when to do it. It also helped us stay in contact with anyone if we needed to contact someone during a shoot.if an accident was to occur , the call sheet would be helpfull , if there was an accident to occur, we have the details of the members and any near hospitals where we are shooting.

Planning: Risk Assessment

Planning: Special Effect Preparation

We wanted to include gore in our ancillary products, so we decided to use fake blood to convey the sense of a horror genre. We used Tomato Ketchup to represent this.

Magazine Templates

Poster Templates

Audience Qualitative Data

During the  of our trailer , i created some template for the magazine front page to experiment with the ways the page could be coded to appeal to the horror/slasher genre and to my audience. After creating the template i carried out research to see which template appealed to people the most. I achieved this by carrying out qualitative research. I kept the templates pretty simple to only concentrate on the structure of the page as the opposed to the content of it and find out which layout looked the best. I presented the templates to a sample of 15-20 year old as that is the age we were aiming our film at.

There was mixed opinions of the templates, it was either little white lies or fangoria. Empire being the least popular mainly because the the other templates out shinned them.  Fangoria responses were it looked basic and crowded with many feature stories however unlike little white lies said it was too plain with not many feature stories , this is because  little white lies challenges common codes and convention of magazine, some were used to seeing the feature stories.

From studying the results i decided to go with Fangoria , although this is a very  conventional magazine although it was the most popular one. There was more than one fangoria template , the first Fangoria template was the least popular of the two fangoria magazines. The feedback included the issue of the page not looking like a magazine or looking tacky. The focus group  didn't like the fact it was so simple and the placement of the film strip was least preferred here. Definitlt will not use this template when creating when the actual page as it was the least popular with my sample.
The second Fangoria template was the most popular sample and favourite one than the other fangoria template. The audience liked the placement of the film strip best position like that. They also commented about the title saying that its size makes it easy to be seen which makes it easy to be seen from afar which will grab the readers attention.

The results i have got from feedback ,  I’ve received is very useful and really helpedd me a lot in the  making process when it comes to designing my real magazine cover. I will definitely take into consideration everything that my sample has commented on and work on my templates, improving them, to make my final product appealing to my target audience. Since fangoria being the most popular option i will combine both first and second fangoria template features from both and apply them to my final product.

POSTER

I have created a poster template in use guiding for creating my final horror trailer. this was so that my target audience can analyse my template so that i can make improvement for final poster front cover.

From the infomation i have collected from the focus group , some replies to this template was "the poster is concentrated on the forest which reinforces the horror genre" and another one stated that " the poster plain and clean but yet interesting , it makes you think about being at the forest which makes you feel like you in a horror film".

The typography was criticized of being hard to read because of the colour and where it has been placed. one stated "the colour of the logo camouflages with the background" however another stated " the typography suits well with overall poster" i have learnt that simple element like like placement of the typography will affect the overall outcome of the poster.

The audience like this template a lot for the following reasons. " this informs me about a slight overview of the narrative of the film , DEA*D his tells me it is related about about group of student who die being hunted by the killer" another stated " the small image helps it make it easier to analyse the image" unlike template 1 the audience responded saying they did not like the colour scheme of template 2 as they said it was to boring. the first template , the audience liked the colour scheme , one stated " the range of dark and bright colour scheme complement each other " from leaning about this i will integrate  those type of colour shcemes as gives a clue that it is a horror film.

Contact Sheet

I researched about my chosen magazine template which is Fangoria before i decided to start creating my final magazine , Fangoria follows many similar conventions found in other magazine. Fangoria common convention is the use close up shots of the monsters/killer , they also use red colour scheme to convey that it is a horror magazine. it also uses a lot of buzz words to attract their readers.

Final Poster

Final Trailer

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Most films have codes and conventions that contribute to identify the difference genre. Over the years films have mixed with code and conventions  to create division of genres known as sub genres. , being slasher one of those. It usually involves generally consist of a psychotic killer who stalks their victim. Over the years horror films have been challenging the traditional codes and conventions to entertain their audience.  By   subverting a traditional elements of the horror genre , however still keep key elements  it helps keep the film look different , new. Furthermore the audience will be able to identify that it is a horror genre.

There is a final girl  who is usually the only person who survives ,  she is considered as the virginal and innocent type who are tormented by basic promiscuous girl teenagers.this is very conventional in slasher films. This term has been introduced by carol j clover who commented that in these films, the audience begin by sharing the perspective of the killer but later experience a shift in identification to the final girl. A common plot line in most horror films includes a final girl.  This convention has been observed in many horror films like, “Halloween” , “scream” and many more. The final girl is usually quiet and pure and gains confidence towards the end of the film. In slasher films they convey being virginal and innocent is the key way of surviving and that being promiscuous is not. Therefore creating a binary opposition between the two.

Results day represents this in the trailer, you can see a final girl.  In our trailer you can see jane (final girl) being looking quite intelligent as you see her with books indicating that she cares about her education. She is also seen as a bit quiet person looking through her body language. The theorist Carol Clover wrote a book called Men Women and Chainsaw which talked about the gender representation in horror films. she said that the final girl can be conveyed as social outcast from others in her group , and also she is the character that helps develop the narrative forward. We wanted to represent the final girl  in this conventional way , so that horror fans can identify with our story line as they can  the similarity with other horror films , this was especially important  that Jane was identifiable.

The final girl can also be seen as the monstrous  , although being seen as a her they can be represented as evil. The Freudian theory can be applied. When the final girl kills the monster they can be described being castrated , who the killer is mostly always a male. This idea is from where a mothers male child leaves the pre oedipal space which is virtual world where child is connected to their mother in a deeper level and takes place in a symbolic order where it becomes traumatic for the child as he finds out his mother does not have the same genitalia. , this will lead the male to thinking their masculinity will be stripped away. They feel threatened by the mother. We represented this our trailer by conveying our final girl as monstrous.

Another we have convention we have is the sexually promiscuous girl in film but not included in our trailer.  she is friends with the final girl Jane. There is binary opposition between her and final girl. She is conveyed in a sexual way , by wearing short skirts ,  tightly fitted clothing in general , the sexually promiscuous dies first in our film , this is conventional of that in other horror films.

We applied Tzetan Todrov theory in our trailer which suggest that every story begins with a equilibrium where the
opposing forces are in balance , a disruption is caused in the event,  which sets in chain of series of evens formed  , a recognition of the disruption is found which leads to an attempt at resolving it.. Eventually a new equilibrium is formed. Those are the 5 stages are conventional in every slasher film and also be found in my mine.

We based this theory into our trailer , the beginning of the trailer we see a close up of the schools logo implying that the characters are students. This represents the equilibrium of the trailer , the start of the story it is quite formulaic sound as from that , in the next shot we two teenager  talking, this enables the audience to identify that it is a teen based horror genre and in that portrayal horror genre is conveyed. Furthermore this helps convey the narrative. After a while the equilibrium is disrupted seen by the teens find themselves getting chased by the killer and getting killed one by one on the victims list. The equilibrium is restored to the normal state as Ahmed manages to get away from the killer but this is not shown in trailer because this is a plot twist. This is a basic element in every  film trailer therefore w used this well so the audience can easily identify with.

In the beginning of the trailer see establishing shot of the forest with the killer at the left waiting for his victims to arrive. There is an opposition between life and death illustrated in the shot , the green leafs represent life , nature however a contrast to this is the killer wearing all black convey the draining of life therefore implying death of the victims.
My trailer was mostly filmed in the forest which is a conventional location to portray the horror genre. We have tried make the best use of the forest to emphasis such as the killer hiding behind the tree while jack and lamar are talking about the their party arrival. The black clothing of the killer represents death therefore it is implying that they are likely to die. This emphasised through the mise en scene.

However our trailer challenges one of the students death , of the black character. It is mostly conventional in slasher film that the only black character  gets killed first or next after the promiscuous sexual girl. In slasher /horror films.  This is always a binary opposition as the killer is predominately white creating a colour division between the two.

I have used a number of editing techniques like matched action , in this part you see john running away from the killer in corridors ,  there is a cut made between the 2 shots in which action has been overlapped. With the use of editing it makes the trailer much smoother for the best possible experience.  With the help of editing it is important to include for non linear trailer.

I used Roland Barthes semantic coding which points to any elements in the text which can connatate any extra meaning . For example jack in the beginning of the trailer if shown running through the forest through point of view shot ,  the helps engage the audience by putting them in the position of the jacks character. The audience can help and identify and relate to his survival.

One of the most important conventions of typical horror convention are the use of logos, commonly found at the beginning of the trailer. We used this to develop the common convention of our horror trailer.  we added the logos of companies who were involved with the  development  and making of our film , this was added in the beginning of our trailer.  we added the name of our  film “Results Day” in the end of the trailer this was done so that the audience naturalize with ther film better.

My film poster i created is very conventional as we have the picture representing the name of the film Results day.  i have included film credit ext at the at the bottom of the poster which is very conventional in horror posters, it includes the  crew ,cast information and age rating of film etc. By including this helps be easily identifiable that it is a poster and not a front book cover for example.

Due to my  film being independent low budget i do not have the best means of industry technology however i used the best of what i got.

I have used black and white to help show the killers bloody knife dripping down on the floor , this helps convey the sense of slasher genre as knife are conventional in almost slasher's , it also can show the killers state of mined as he is lonely.

my magazine is based off from fangoria which is a conventional magazine. The image showing Results day helps reinforces the horror genre with the use of blood. I used blood in order to convey the sense of danger and death. The placement of my film typography has changed due to not being able to control the placement of the layout of the magazine , as you can it is laced at the near the bottom right.
i have used banners on top of the magazine to help advertise a feature film , yellow is used throughout the magazine which give the representation of the video nasty poster. This helps the audience allow identify that this is horror magazine.
i have used buzz words to attract my audience like "Win" which helps gain attention from the reader , it reads Win Sundance Festival Tickets , therefore the reader has a reason to read the magazine.
Another convention i used was the film feature stories as you can see , this helps gain attention from the reader.
