Genre Analysis

Genre is a very important concept to everyone also involving film makers , film critcs and audience as well as media theorist.  Over the years many studies have been carried out to catogeries films through various common patterns as well as what we learn from the categorisation of a film as atext.

Genres are decided  by set of rules of codes and conventions and have no set boundaries and that many films today have divided into  sub genres ,who do not belong to just one genre. For example there are lots of formation of sub genres like Rom Coms which are combination romantics and comedy genres. This applies to horror genres as well , horror genre is divided into many sub  genre categories which  lie under the horror genre , supernatural , comedy , demons,  , slasher and many more .  These codes and convention allow the audience to identify particular genres as they would expect certain thing withi in it to occur. All of the sub genres need to share some common qualities of the genre like the narrative so the storyline and plots  are often familiar to emphasise the overall genre. There are common types of characters i.e., sexually promiscuous girl, final girl . Benefactor, monster etc. the films often share the geographical setting etc. All of these illustrate to the audience what genre the film they are watching is. There 2 ways to identify a film genre is to approach from a descriptive or a functional point of view. The 1 st one includes the viewing a film as belonging to a genre or a category , this involves a film to share similar contribution with other films in the same category.  This can be said in our film as their is a  descriptive approach as it does share common values of other slasher film genres .  our film has a final girl  , who is represented as a pure and quiet one , the group of friends , the sexually promiscuous teenage girl  , the killer etc.  Furthermore it is set on the woods .

Most or all of these textual properties can be seen many slasher /horror films like scream , Halloween , Friday 13th and along with  many other ones.

The2 nd approach to study film genre is the functional approach where you need to think about the producers and audience and how a it applies to a trailer
